After months of social media posts hinting at it, luxury automobile manufacturer Lamborghini has finally announced its first non-fungible token (NFT) project. The Space Key is a collection of five physical items that unlocks a unique digital artwork by the yet to be identified artist. The project was developed in collaboration with NFT PRO(tm) the “collector’s work” is limited to five units and will soon be auctioned off.

Each Space Key contains a block composed of a carbon-fire composite material. It was shipped to the International Space Station as part of a 2019 research program. After returning to Earth the Space Key was imprinted with the QR code which links it to the digital component of the Space Key.

Each of the five Space Keys features a different moment that takes place at different times when the Lamborghini Ultimae takes off towards the stars. More than 600 million pixels each of the five images, which were taken by photographer Fabian Oefner.

Oefner used a balloon equipped with a camera to take each of the individual shots which were later merged into the final image. The result is a photo that is out of this world. It captures both the beauty of Earth and the futuristic, hyperrealistic picture of a car rising from the Earth. The Space Keys are going to be auctioned off in the near future, but there is no exact date or place yet.

The auction

The auctions, which will occur between February 1 through February 4, last for 75 hours and 50 minutes, the same time it took for Apollo 11 to leave Earth and enter the lunar orbit. The five NFTs are available for bidding by creating an account online. Each NFT will be auctioned off separately and the winner will receive a digital artwork by renowned photographer Fabian Oefner that captures five different moments the Space Key experienced during its space voyage.
